AI Security Cameras Add Active Deterrence—and Monthly Costs

AI-enabled security cameras can do more than save footage after a package disappears. They can sort people, pets, vehicles, deliveries, and weather-related movement, then react when something appears suspicious. Possible responses include a bright light, a spoken warning, or a siren. Some systems can also monitor a delivered package when someone stays nearby too long.

The upgrade usually costs 10% to 50% more at purchase, or about $10 to $30 above a traditional camera. The larger expense may come later: subscriptions generally cost $3 to $15 monthly for one camera, or $10 to $30 for coverage across a home. Those fees often support the detection and response tools, which may stop working if the subscription ends.

The added protection may be more useful around busy streets, frequent deliveries, or homes that have experienced theft attempts. Lower-traffic or gated properties may not need every active feature. AI deterrence does not replace locked doors and secured windows, and lights or audio warnings could create neighborhood noise complaints. Buyers also need enough cameras for driveways and blind spots, along with recognition settings for regular visitors and service workers.
