Gas burner clicking but not lighting? Turn it off before checking the cap

Turn the knob off first, use the gas-odor exit branch, and limit the cool cooktop check to model-approved caps, dryness, and ports.

A gas burner ignition failure means the burner releases no normal flame when its control calls for ignition. Return the knob to Off immediately. If you smell gas after the knob is off, do not try another burner, use a switch, unplug anything, or make a phone call inside. Leave and call 911 and the gas supplier from a safe location.

My rule: one failed light is a clue, not permission to keep releasing gas. The homeowner check begins only when every knob is off, there is no gas odor, the cooktop is fully cool, and the model manual puts the part within normal cleaning access.

Separate one burner from a whole-cooktop problem

Record which burner failed, whether you heard clicking, whether a spark was visible from a safe position, recent cleaning or a boil-over, a power interruption, and whether the cap was removed. Note if other burners were already known to work, but do not cycle them repeatedly for comparison.

Stop and leave for any continuing gas odor. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration says to leave a suspected leak by foot immediately, not try to locate its source, and call 911 and the pipeline company from a safe location. It also says not to create a flame or other ignition source, operate electrical switches or equipment, or use a phone inside.

Let a wet burner become fully dry

Cleaning water and a recent spill can interrupt ignition. With the burner cool and the controls off, remove only the grate and cap that the owner's manual identifies as user-removable. Blot visible moisture and allow the pieces and burner area to dry. Whirlpool notes that moisture in burner ports can prevent ignition.

Keep cleaning liquid out of the knob shafts and control area. If clicking continues while every knob is off, disconnect power only if the plug is safely accessible and there is no gas odor, then arrange service. Do not pull a range forward, disturb an anti-tip bracket, or strain a gas connector to reach a plug.

Seat the correct cap and protect the ports

Match each cap to its burner and set it flat in the documented position. A tilted or swapped cap can interrupt the intended gas and spark path. Clean loose food from user-accessible surfaces using the model instructions. Whirlpool says a straight pin may be used on specified burner ports but warns not to enlarge or distort them and not to use a wooden toothpick. Your manual controls.

Do not remove an orifice, loosen a burner base, probe a gas opening, bend the igniter, adjust the air shutter, or test wiring. Those actions cross from ordinary cleaning into gas and electrical service.

Make one documented attempt or stop

When there has been no gas odor, the parts are dry and correctly seated, and the manual supports the check, make one normal ignition attempt while staying at the control. Turn it off immediately if the flame does not establish normally. A delayed whoosh, flame lifting away from the burner, yellow sooting, repeated clicking, or uneven ignition needs qualified service.

Give the technician the model, failed burner, click and spark observations, spill history, cap position, and result of the single attempt. Ask the closeout to identify the exact cap, port, igniter, switch, wiring, control, regulator, or supply finding and to verify normal ignition and flame at every burner.
