GFCI outlet won’t reset? Make one safe check, then stop

Remove loads, keep the area dry, check external power once, and treat a failed reset as a fault—not a button problem.

Keep the area dry, remove connected loads, make one external power check, and treat a failed or repeated reset as a safety signal.

A GFCI outlet that will not reset is doing one of three useful things: refusing to energize without incoming power, detecting a fault on the protected circuit, or showing that the device itself needs service. Unplug loads, keep the area dry, and make one controlled check. Do not hold the button in or open the box.

Start with water, heat, and damage

Stop immediately for standing water, a wet faceplate, heat, discoloration, buzzing, crackling, smoke, a burning smell, or a loose outlet. Keep people away. For active smoke or fire, leave and call emergency services; for the other warning signs, leave the circuit unused and call a licensed electrician. CPSC's home electrical safety checklist says wet electrical products can create a serious shock hazard and unusually warm outlets can signal unsafe wiring.

Remove the load before asking for a reset

Unplug everything from the GFCI and nearby dead receptacles that may be downstream. Check for an appliance exposed to water or a damaged cord; retire it rather than using the outlet as a repeated test. If the circuit is dry and undamaged, press RESET once. A reset that trips when one device is reconnected points to that device or its use conditions, not permission to keep retrying.

Check the external power path once

From a dry floor, look at the labeled branch breaker and other known GFCIs that protect the same area. A breaker handle may rest between positions; follow the panel label and manufacturer directions for one reset only. Do not reset a hot, damaged, wet, or repeatedly tripping breaker. Never remove the panel cover or receptacle plate.

Use the TEST button only after power returns

CPSC recommends monthly GFCI testing. After a successful reset, use the built-in TEST button and confirm that power stops, then RESET. If TEST does not cut power, RESET will not latch, the button feels damaged, or the outlet remains dead while the circuit is known to have power, leave it unused for an electrician. My view: a reset is a safety check, not a repair.

Give the electrician a short fault record

Record the room, which outlets are dead, what was plugged in, whether moisture or a storm preceded the trip, breaker and upstream-GFCI observations, and the exact result of one test/reset cycle. Pair that map with the breaker trip guide. It helps separate a failed receptacle from a downstream ground fault, lost feed, loose connection, or wiring error without homeowner voltage tests.
