If the sump water is rising and the pump is not moving it, protect people and the building before troubleshooting. Stay out of standing water, do not touch a wet plug or receptacle, and call emergency water-removal or plumbing help when the level is near the floor, electrical equipment, or finished space.
Read the pit without reaching into it
From stable, dry flooring, note the water level, whether the pump is silent, humming, cycling, or running without discharge, and whether the float appears trapped by a pipe, cord, lid, or debris. Do not put a hand or tool into the pit while the unit is connected to power. Keep children and pets away from an open or unsecured cover.
Check dry, external power only
Confirm the plug has not fallen out and observe the known GFCI and labeled breaker only when the entire route is dry. Make one permitted reset. A repeated trip, warm outlet, damaged cord, wet electrical component, or pump that hums without moving water needs qualified service. Never use an extension cord as the repair.
Trace the discharge from the ground
Look for a frozen, crushed, disconnected, or visibly blocked discharge and for water returning near the foundation. Do not separate pressurized fittings, open a check valve, or climb to inspect an outlet. FEMA's basement-backup guidance treats the discharge and backflow path as part of the system, not an afterthought.
Use a safe functional test, not a forced float
Follow the pump manufacturer's test procedure. Some manuals permit adding clean water to the basin from a safe position; others specify a different method. Do not hold a switch, bypass a controller, or run the pump dry. Record the level at which it starts and stops and whether water leaves the pit. My view: manually making the motor run proves less than watching one complete automatic cycle.
Prepare for the next outage after this one is stable
Ask service to identify whether the failure involved power, float travel, intake, impeller, check valve, discharge, pump sizing, or motor condition. Save the test date, model, circuit, discharge route, repair, and automatic-cycle result. Then use the battery-backup plan to compare backup power and alarms before the next storm, not during it.
